910 Royal

Split into two movements, 910 Royal draws inspiration from a challenging period in my life. Construction on the bricks of 910 Royal Street caused me to be displaced for several weeks during a period when I was in graduate school, working a second job, and applying for PhD/DMA programs. However, the dust eventually settled, and I was stronger for it.

I. XVI. LA TOUR

This movement is based on the Tower card from the tarot. This card represents change, upsets, and destruction of the old. When pulled in a reading, this card can mean big changes in one’s life; the old worn-out structure is torn down to be built anew. Throughout the movement, one can hear the staccato hammers while the Tower theme is built up and paired down several times. All of which, cumulates in a neo-romantic lament leading to an optimistic finish as the construction ends.

II. Marche dE Salon

This movement was inspired by the apartment in which I was displaced in. The “Guilded Age” era décor of the space made me feel as though I were in old New Orleans, and I, in part, used this light-hearted work as a form of escapism from the turbulence around me throughout the construction. The piece earns it’s name from the March form used within, and in truth, this movement combines a study of form with the sounds of virtuosic salon music; perfectly describing the mix of antique and modern at 910 Royal.
